What Is LitVM? Litecoin's First Trustless EVM Rollup
A complete technical overview of LitVM: architecture, hybrid execution model, dual-token system, and current testnet status.
Updated
LitVM is Litecoin's first trustless EVM rollup, officially endorsed by the Litecoin Foundation. It is a hybrid rollup—not a pure zkRollup—that combines Arbitrum Nitro for optimistic execution with Succinct SP1 zkVM for validity proving to deliver fast finality. Currently, LitVM operates on its public testnet, LiteForge; mainnet has not launched, and the $LITVM token does not exist as a tradeable asset.
Architecture: The Hybrid Rollup Model
Traditional optimistic rollups require a seven-day challenge window before transactions reach finality. Pure zkRollups avoid this dispute delay but typically require building a custom zkEVM circuit from scratch—a complex, multi-year engineering process that must be updated whenever the EVM specification changes.
LitVM resolves this trade-off using a hybrid design. Arbitrum Nitro executes transactions optimistically, granting near-instant soft confirmations. Simultaneously, the Succinct SP1 zkVM generates zero-knowledge validity proofs over that execution. Because SP1 can prove the execution of arbitrary Rust code, and Arbitrum Nitro's state transition function is written in Rust, LitVM proves standard EVM execution without a custom arithmetic circuit.
This architecture produces finality in minutes rather than days. Proof generation costs roughly $0.01 to $0.02 per transaction, and recursive proof aggregation keeps proving costs flat as network volume expands.
| Layer | Technology | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Execution | Arbitrum Nitro (Arbitrum Orbit) | Optimistic state execution and sub-second confirmations |
| Proving | Succinct SP1 zkVM | Validity proof generation over Nitro's Rust state transition |
| Sequencing | Espresso | Permissionless shared sequencing for censorship resistance |
| LTC Bridge | BitcoinOS Grail | 1-of-n trustless native asset bridging using BitSNARKs |
| EVM Bridge | Arbitrum Bridge | Arbitrum-native bridging for ETH, USDC, USDT, and ERC-20s |
| Infrastructure | Caldera | Rollup-as-a-service operations (RPC, explorer, monitoring) |
Network Performance Comparison
LitVM provides smart contract capabilities and throughput that the Litecoin mainchain cannot support natively. By compressing calldata and batching up to 10,000 transactions per rollup block, LitVM scales transaction capacity while retaining trust-minimized security.
| Metric | LitVM Rollup | Litecoin L1 | Ethereum L1 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Throughput | Thousands of TPS | ~56 TPS | ~15 TPS |
| Transaction Fee | Sub-cent ($0.01–$0.02 proof cost) | Sub-cent | $1.00–$100.00+ |
| Finality Time | Minutes (ZK validity proof) | 2.5 minutes (block time) | 12+ minutes |
| Smart Contracts | Full EVM equivalence (Shanghai) | Script, Ordinals, Runes, LTC-20 | Full EVM equivalence |
| Consensus / Base | Hybrid (Nitro + SP1) | Scrypt Proof of Work (>2 PH/s) | Proof of Stake |
The Dual-Token Economy
LitVM uses two distinct tokens to separate network utility and gas payments from governance incentives:
- zkLTC (Gas & Base Asset): zkLTC is the native gas token of the rollup. It is minted 1:1 against LTC locked on the Litecoin mainchain via the BitcoinOS Grail bridge. It has an elastic supply that precisely tracks the amount of bridged LTC and is always redeemable for native LTC. Because gas is paid in zkLTC, users transact in an asset backed directly by external money that the rollup cannot inflate.
- $LITVM (Governance & Utility Token): $LITVM has a fixed total supply, with 51% reserved for community allocation. $LITVM holders and stakers receive a share of sequencer fees, institutional yield vault fees (such as DNA Fund vaults with published 7–11% APR in spot LTC), and protocol fees.
Important Notice: $LITVM does not exist as a tradeable asset. The Token Generation Event (TGE) will occur after the testnet phase, and mainnet will follow the TGE and completed security audits. Any token currently listed or trading under the ticker $LITVM is fraudulent.
Bridging and Settlement Roadmap
LitVM connects to external chains through two separate bridge systems: the BitcoinOS Grail bridge and the Arbitrum Bridge.
- BitcoinOS Grail Bridge: Moves native LTC onto LitVM to mint zkLTC. It relies on a 300-byte BitSNARK proof, a 1-of-n honest verifier security model, and Taproot locks on the Litecoin mainchain. It operates without centralized custodians or multisig committees.
- Arbitrum Bridge: Handles standard EVM assets, allowing ETH, USDC, USDT, and other ERC-20 tokens to transfer into LitVM under an optimistic-plus-ZK verification model.
LitVM rolls out canonical settlement across three distinct phases:
- Phase 1 (Current Architecture): LitVM settles on Ethereum while utilizing zkLTC for gas, Espresso for shared sequencing, and both bridging infrastructures.
- Phase 2 (Dual Anchoring): Finalized transaction batches are additionally anchored to the Litecoin mainchain by inscribing SP1 validity proofs through standard extended transactions, requiring no protocol-level fork on Litecoin.
- Phase 3 (Litecoin Finality): Canonical settlement migrates entirely off Ethereum to Litecoin, making Litecoin's 14-year Scrypt Proof of Work network (operating above 2 PH/s) the ultimate settlement layer.

Questions
Is LitVM a pure zkRollup or an optimistic rollup?
LitVM is a hybrid rollup rather than a pure zkRollup. It uses Arbitrum Nitro to execute transactions optimistically for instant confirmations, while Succinct SP1 zkVM generates zero-knowledge validity proofs over that execution to achieve finality in minutes instead of a seven-day dispute window.
Can I buy or trade the $LITVM token today?
No. $LITVM does not exist as a tradeable asset yet. The Token Generation Event (TGE) is scheduled to take place after the testnet concludes, ahead of the mainnet launch. Any token currently offering $LITVM trading should be treated as fraudulent.
What is the difference between zkLTC and $LITVM?
zkLTC is the rollup's native gas token, backed 1:1 by native LTC locked in Taproot contracts via the BitcoinOS Grail bridge, and has an elastic supply. $LITVM is a fixed-supply utility and governance token that receives a portion of network sequencer and protocol fees.
How does LitVM settle transactions on Litecoin?
LitVM follows a three-phase settlement roadmap. In Phase 1, it settles on Ethereum. In Phase 2, finalized batches and SP1 proofs are anchored to Litecoin via standard extended transactions. In Phase 3, canonical settlement migrates entirely to Litecoin's Scrypt Proof of Work mainchain.
